A story about frank black

i saw him at the catalyst in santa cruz around 1995. i’m pretty sure lyle workman was on lead that night. anyway, after the show i was standing at the top of the stairs (the same stairs mentioned in my modest mouse story by the way) and i saw good ol’ chuck movin’ across the floor in my direction. he passed by me & i turned and chased after him saying ‘frank! frank!’ he ignored me. i caught up to him & put my hand on his shoulder saying ‘frank!’ again. he looked over his shoulder briefly while still walking. dissed. he just kept walking. that was it. he went out to the sidewalk and looked around intently before returning to his lair behing the stage. i was completely shut down by the man. ever since then i’ve been too excited that my hand touched his sholder to realize (until now) how lame i was and how rude he was. what a crummy story.

Why I admire Doug Martsch

there is nothing cooler than a maniacal guitarist/songwriter who is otherwise just a regular family guy. there is something truly endearing about this gentle soul.

Why things are awkward between me and Isaac Brock

i think it was the first of many times i saw the mouse. back before moon + antarctic came out. before the show he was sitting on a couch with a guy by the bar. as my beau at the time and i topped the stairs we we found ourselves staring right at him. maybe ten feet between us & the couch he was on. as we continued walking he fully, unabashedly, for an extended period, checked out my gal. stared her up and down and all around. she said after we got a little further from him ‘dude. isaac was totally checking me out.’ i said ‘yep. he certainly was.’

Why things are awkward between me and Dan Deacon

i was emailed a confirmation that i’d be in his choir at the echo & flaked. too tired that night. didn’t wanna dance. shouldn’t’ve flaked though. lost a memory there.

How I met Ian Anderson

i know someone who knows someone in jt. we were all having drinks after the show & ian and his wife sit down w/ us. after we met, he took out a writing pad and didn’t look up or say a word the rest of the night. he must’ve been working something out in his brain. he came off as very serious, but that may just be the moment i caught him in.

A story about Stephen Malkmus

i saw three jicks shows in january 2007 (w/ entrance) – which i believe to be the first tour w/ the wonderfully brutal miss janet weiss. first: el rey theatre, los angeles, ca. 2nd: glass house, pomona, ca. 3rd: soho, santa barbara, ca. in terms of sonics, the show at the glass house took the cake, but they were all fantastic. steve smiles a lot now onstage. joanna makes jokes. there was a funny moment at the soho show when a heckler said steve’s mom was hot. steve didn’t hear him, but joanna said ‘wait. did he just say “your mom is hot”?’ steve thought joanna meant him and said ‘no. i didn’t say that.’ joanna laughed and they launched into some awesome song or another. Later on steve thanked his cousin and sister for showing up.

anyway, after the show i ran off to get some cash from an atm while the super sweet merch girl waited. when i came back she was there with janet weiss and i held up a shirt to check the size. just then a man walked up to janet + merch girl and said to me ‘that’s the one. that’s your shirt. you should buy it because this is the pre-release tour. once the album comes out they’re gonna have all new sirts and this one will be the cool shirt.’ i said ‘well, i think you just made the band 15 clams.’

i went outside and had a smoke. the band was packing up their gear and carrying it out the side door where i was. they were running back and forth as i sat on a bench kind of half paying attention. then the shirt guy walked out and offered me a camel. he asked if i’d seen malkmus before and what i thought of the show. i told him i’d just seen three and that they were great. that steve seems genuinely happy – which this man says is certainly true. i told him i’d been a fan since i was 15 (so, 10 years) and i’d caught the pave at the fillmore (sf) on the terror twilight tour. he asked if i’d met steve & i said no. he said ‘you should meet him he’s around here somewhere. he’s a really nice guy.’ “i’m pretty certain he is, i just don’t know what i’d say.’ i told him i was especially excited about the new material/record because these songs are fantastic. he asked if i play music. ‘i do.’ he said ‘ok, cool. next time we meet you’ll be playing and we’ll come see you.’ he said good night. i said ‘the merch girl has really pretty hair.’ what a fool my tongue is. i question its timing with that statement bigtime. nice thing to say, akward time to say it. that’s it.

so i didn’t meet the malk, but i crossed paths with miss weiss and malk’s brother in law. oh, i did rub elbows with malk before the show when i went to get tix. he was there at the bar eating with the merch girl next to him and joanna was there as well as paz (bass/violin player for entrance). big whoop!
